Being nervous comes with the territory, but there is a method that helps. What I do is be the most confident person in the room. Have you ever met someone who was so confident that it just radiated from them? Be that person. No matter how hard you have to pretend. You can pretend so hard that you actually end up feeling confident.
Another way to feel better walking in, is to drill your answers to someone else. There are many articles on interview questions and you can drill those with a parent or friend to be very prepared.
Lastly, come prepared with a clean outfit, be early, bring your resume, etc.. The last thing you want to do is show up late and unprepared. That is a sure way to start off on the wrong foot. 2. The #1 Question to Ask to Make Sure You Are Hired
After an interview, you are never totally sure if you nailed it or not. The whole process is like a game of poker. But, after the interview process, you can ask this question to see how far you are from the finish line:
What is still standing in the way of you offering me this position?
What does this question do? It opens the door for you to handle any originations that person might still have so that you can handle them and have a better chance at succeeding. They can let you know what they are still on the fence about or any conflicts with hiring you. Also, if they are considering hiring someone else, this opens the door for you to show your talents or ask them what you could do to prove that you are worth the position.
For example, it is down to you and one other person. You can tell the interviewer that you would love a chance to do a working interview to be able to show them that you are the person for the job. If someone said this to me as a recruiter, I would definitely pick them.
3. Be Interested and not Interesting
As a recruiter, this is my number one job interview tip. Be interested in the interviewer. Be interested in the company. Be interested in their employees and corporate culture. I like to think of interviewing like dating. You are really dating each other before you get married. You are spending every day of your life with these people.
How would you feel if you were on a date and the person never asked you one single question about yourself? Well, they probably wouldn’t get a second date. Same goes for an interview. You can get so introverted that you are only thinking about landing the job, but everyone is that way. So, stand out.
Unless you are trying to get into sales, be confident but not overconfident. It is always a big red flag for me when I get the person who is telling me all they can do because they are so awesome. I know immediately that they will overpromise and underdeliver.
What I want is someone who is confident that they can get the job done but not so confident that they are telling me lies. That is a sure way to see yourself out the door without another invitation back.
4. What To Do If You Think They Are On The Fence
Most of the job interview tips that I see are on closing the deal at the end of the interview. But the interview starts before you are ever in front of the recruiter. The interview starts at your initial phone call or email. It starts when you pick up the phone and it starts when you have your first interaction.
Everything leading up to the interview is weighed. It matters that you check in to confirm the interview time the day before. It matters that you arrive on time and come prepared. All of these things will make you stand out. And if, in the end, you are neck and neck with another candidate, those qualities will make you stand out and be the reason you are chosen.
